2022: Gilded Glamour

After a somewhat low-key 2021, this Gala presented a veritable embarrassment of riches—and I'm not just talking about the 5th Avenue philanthropists, ayooo! No, there were truly too many good looks to post, even excluding the most obvious winners. The selection here contains those that consistently stopped me in my tracks.

Quannah Chasinghorse in Prabal Gurung

Many netizens pegged Quannah's 2021 look as that year's 'Best Dressed' dark horse, but I like this year's ensemble even better. Need I explain why? Use your eyes!!!

Erykah Badu in Marni

It's not really fair to Ms. Badu that 'top hat + braids + patchwork' immediately reminds me of 4 Non Blondes, but it is what it is. Linda Perry never achieved this level of swagger, though!

later

Anok Yai in Michael Kors

A rich pink on deep skin, allover sequins, gloves that match the gown: all sure-fire winners. But anything other than slicked-down hair with a coquettish bang would have been a distraction, or else underwhelming. Bravo!

Danina Gurira in Head of State

Another instance of the styling making the look. Royal blue satin structural gown is solidly in "Pretty but Not Very Exciting" territory, but then: that horsehair flyswatter! Covered in the same satin! Ugh!!

Kerby Jean-Raymond in Gucci, Hamish Bowles in Ralph Lauren

We're finally in the era where the menswear rivals the womanswear in quality! Key details: a greenstone necklace matching moss-covered loafers, a vintage tiara, and a cheeky mustache.

Sebastian Stan in Valentino, Kodi Smit-McPhee in Bottega Veneta, Emma Corrin in Miu Miu

"Crazy but I Love It" menswear lighting round. (Is it still menswear if the person wearing it is NB? Discuss!)

Olivia DeJonge in Prada

... dressed for the 1992 Oscars, somehow?
