2019: Camp Notes on Fashion
For me, the most memorable part of this Met Gala was Violet Chachki authoring an article for Vogue the day after, arguing that she should've received a points multiplier simply for being a drag queen. At least she did fundamentally look good, unlike Aquaria! But I digress!

Lupita Nyong'o in Versace
Really, really hard to overstate how sublime this outfit is from the waist up. If the waist down had been just as good, we'd have had ourselves a winner!

Florence Welch in Gucci
Is Florence + The Machine camp?? It's over the top, yes; it's very sincere... but does that add up to campiness??? Anyway, this ensemble kicks ass.

Julia Garner in Zac Posen
Gorgeous gown, objectively not camp. Yet I can imagine it appearing in some sci-fi silent film or pre-Code musical, which *would* be campy? Also: peep Nina Dobrev in the background in her 'glass' ice skater dress, also by Zac Posen!

Hailee Steinfeld in Viktor & Rolf
Ha, what a laugh! The dress says 'no photos', and yet she's wearing it to an event where she is *bound* to be snap-shotted! And what's this? Her purse is shaped like a camera? Jolly good fun!

Bethann Hardison in Dapper Dan for Gucci
Dapper Dan and Bethann Hardison both getting the recognition they deserve is so nice. And thank god, the look they put together is really solid—it's hard to combine red and green without leaning 'christmas', and that jacket could've easily turned dumpy—so I'm not just stuck parroting platitudes like 'what legends!' etc. etc.

Jemima Kirke and Lena Dunham in Christopher Kane
Announcing your rubber fetish via screen-printed mini dress should not be shocking in 2019, even at the Met Gala. At yet: I didn't see anyone else doing it!!

Amber Valetta in YSL, Dee and Tommy Hilfiger in Hilfiger
Amber Valetta's cameltoe, Dee Hilfiger's suburban-mom-at-the-Mardi-Gras American flag dress: for my money the purest expressions of (naïve) camp at this Gala.
