2016: Manus x Machina

Now we're cooking with gas! Many, many people came on-theme, perhaps trying to generate some of the same buzz that Rihanna did a year before. Sadly half these people came wearing the same silver cut-out robot look, but beggars can't be choosers!

Claire Danes in Zac Posen

I don't remember this getting much press, but holy hell, this gown bioluminesces??? And it doesn't look super tacky and DIY??

later

Kate Hudson in Versace

Hot android babe debutante. Gown stuck mid-transformation when the enemy agents invade the gala. Britney Spears' "Break the Ice" plays on the soundtrack.

Kim Kassel in ???

Supernova meets black hole, like if fireworks created darkness instead of light. Bodice looks like some kind of rotting liquid, dripping up instead of down. I'm maybe over-selling it a little.

later

Jourdan Dunn in Balmain

Objectively the best of the silver cut-out robot looks. Hard to go wrong with bugle bead embroidery, a perfect bob, and a gigwatt smile!

later later

Karlie Kloss in Brandon Maxwell

World's Mildest Reveal. But those cutouts are... yummy...

later

Lupita Nyong'o in Calvin Klein

Not Lupita's best look—simply because she has so many good ones!—but that sequin gradation into sheerness is exquisite, and the hair is unbeatable.

Hamish Bowles in Gucci

Props to Hamish Bowles for wearing interesting suits to The Met long before it caught on broadly!
